PEO STRI Awards Contract for the Laser Marksmanship Training Systems
(February 25, 2005)--
The U.S. Army, PEO STRI (Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation) awarded an $11.2 million contract to MPRI located in Columbia, Maryland for the Laser Marksmanship Training Systems (LMTS) and the Laser Counter Convoy Ambush Training System (L-CCATS). The simulations will provide critical marksmanship training to Soldiers. If all options are exercised, the contract has a total value of $18.6 million.
The training systems provide deployable marksmanship training that operates in austere environments. The LMTS provides individual marksmanship training while the L-CCATS provides collective training. Soldiers train using their actual weapons without live ammunition. The systems provide realistic, cost effective training to units who are deployed or at homestation. The LMTS simulates weapons training events and leads to live-fire qualifications for individual and crew served weapons. The fielding of the LMTS helps meet the US Army Infantry Schools training strategy for small arms training.
"This capability will enable our warfighters to experience realistic marksmanship training that will hone their skills and prepare our Soldiers for combat missions," said Lt. Col. Joe Giunta, the Product Manager for Ground Combat Tactical Trainers at PEO STRI. "The systems we field today enable our Soldiers to be confident on the battlefield as they face real, live threats in this global war on terror."
The systems will be used by Active, Reserves and the National Guard for continuing operations in the Global War on Terrorism.
This contract was awarded under the PEO STRI Omnibus Contract (STOC). The program will be managed under the Product Manager, Ground Combat Tactical Trainers at PEO STRI. PEO STRI is headquartered in Central Florida's Research Park in East Orlando. In addition to research, development and program management, the PEO provides Life-Cycle support and operations for most of the Army's training systems around the world. PEO STRI is dedicated to putting the power of simulation into the hands of our warfighters.
